It is not recommended to independently choose drugs for the treatment of the genitourinary system, because the intake of drugs may become ineffective if the cause of the disease is incorrectly determined. The manifestation of any genitourinary infection is always associated with the multiplication of pathogenic microflora (bacteria, microbes, rarely viruses), and the reactions of the genitourinary system to numerous pathogens.
All of the above inflammations are grouped together in the group of UTIs (UTIs) – urinary tract infection, diseases caused by genitourinary infections. The treatment of UTIs requires antibiotics and antibiotic therapy, and it is worth remembering that the choice of drugs is conditioned by the active harmful microflora present. The appointment of drugs makes a doctor-urologist, nephrologist after analyzing and understanding exactly what kind of bacteria led to the disease. For the treatment of pathologies of the genitourinary system of men and women requires an individual plan, the choice of drugs, concomitant therapy.
It is important to distinguish inflammation caused by genitourinary infections (UTIs) from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs or STIs, types of sexually transmitted infections). STDs (STIs) are a large group of pathologies of viral, protozoal, fungal, bacterial, or parasitic origin that are transmitted from person to person. While genitourinary infections arise as a result of poor hygiene, weakened immunity, the influence of other endogenous factors.
Please note: all types of drugs listed further in the review are not a ready-made treatment plan for diseases of the genitourinary system, and all information provided is for informational purposes only.
Drugs for the treatment of genitourinary infections in women and men
Among all existing infections and groups of diseases of the genitourinary system, pathologies peculiar only to men or exclusively to women are distinguished. In addition to diseases that have a dependence on the sex of the patient, common pathologies caused by genitourinary infections are also common. Regardless of gender, UTIs in men and women manifest themselves in the form of pyelonephritis, cystitis and urethritis. All these diseases require preliminary examination, accurate diagnosis and prescription of a course of antibacterial drugs with additional therapy at the discretion of the attending physician.
Medications for pyelonephritis
This group includes drugs that have a targeted effect on only one of the manifestations of pyelonephritis or glomerulonephritis (damage to the kidney tubules). Their reception is carried out comprehensively, and different tablets, other medicinal forms significantly relieve the symptoms of the disease, eliminate genitourinary infections. Preference is given to drugs acting in one of the main directions:
- Antimicrobial therapy – antibiotics of different groups, eliminate the infection-causing agent
- Antibacterial action – combined synthetic agents;
- Fighting inflammation – NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs);
- Elimination of edema – diuretics.
Additionally, if indicated, for the therapy of pyelonephritis may be prescribed antihistamines (to relieve a possible allergic reaction to antibiotics), hypotensive and antispasmodic drugs (reducing pressure, eliminating pain symptoms). Taking multivitamins also has a positive effect on the cure. But no matter how severe the kidney disease, it is impossible to cure pathologies without a comprehensive prescription, in the absence of a system and treatment plan. It is necessary to take several drugs.
BROAD SPECTRUM ANTIBIOTICS
These are the main types of drugs to eliminate the cause of pyelonephritis, as well as various glomerular diseases. Standards of drug treatment provide for the use of antibiotics of several groups selectively, depending on the result of tests. More often recommended in the form of injections, tablets are used in the absence of the possibility of injections.
Maximally effective are the following types of drugs that affect the gram-negative flora, which is required to eliminate the infection-causing agents:
- Aminoglycosides – preparations based on amikacin and kanamycin;
- Carbapenems
- Broad-spectrum penicillins (including in combinations)
- Amoxicillin
- Ampicillin
- Ticarcillin
ANTIBACTERIAL AGENTS
Unlike antibiotics, the origin of these drugs is completely synthetic, and the effect on pathogenic microorganisms is markedly more aggressive with low toxicity to the body. The activity of antibacterial synthetic agents is manifested against most infections, and the manifestation of side effects is rather an exception.
The following drugs are used to treat pyelonephritis and diseases of the urogenital system, even if the pathology is caused by atypical for the disease infection – E. coli, gram-positive cocci. An additional advantage of antibacterial agents over antibiotics – the drugs are more convenient to use because of the availability of the form of release in tablets.

NSAIDs – nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
With pyelonephritis, drugs of this category have an effect in several directions at once: it is antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect. It should be remembered that NSAIDs do not eliminate the harmful microflora – the infection itself, which in most cases is one of the gram-negative bacteria. But without anti-inflammatories, the course of treatment with the main drugs (antibiotics) will be incomplete and will take longer, affecting the general well-being of the patient.
It is not allowed to prescribe Aspirin, Paracetamol and other NSAIDs that have a nephrotoxic effect (with a possible negative effect on the kidneys). A choice of topical NSAIDs and pyrazolones in combination is recommended.
DIURETICS.
Diuretics – no less important participants in the treatment program for pyelonephritis, since in the process of withdrawing fluid, the body gets rid of toxins, infections. The course of treatment provides abundant drinking, at least two liters a day, also the circulation in the kidneys is not prohibited to restore with the help of natural remedies: juices and herbs, berries, fruits and vegetables with a high fluid content.
